Most Sarracenia (Pitcher Plants) will work with the same techniques & media.

Sarracenia tissue is very hard to sterilize. We have been working on this and have found decent success. Look in the tissue culture section (Sarracenia) of the forum. for the latest info.
If you use hormones transfer to hormone free media after 8 - 12 weeks or after good shoot growth is achieved. Transfer to rooting media if needed, 1-2 ml/L NAA or IBA (1mg/ml).
Sarracenia
Difficulty:      Hard, except seeds which are moderate Usable Parts:      Leaves w/sm pc rhizome, rhizome, Seeds, Flower Stalks?
Sterilization: Seeds:
15 min. bleach | 2 - 5 min. rinses or 1 - 10 to 15 min. rinse
or
Sterilize by soaking in 2% PPM 4 hrs with no rinse - I use this for all seeds and it works great
Leaf w/rhizome:
Rinse in running water | 90% Alchohol short dip. | 5 min. peroxide | 40 min bleach | 15 min rinse | 5% PPM 4 hours | No Rinse, transfer directly to media
Rhizome:
Rinse in running water | 5 min. peroxide | 45 min bleach | 15 min rinse | 5% PPM 4 hours.
Success will be moderate. We are trying NaDCC and the results are looking great. Check out the forum for updated information until I get something published here.
Gathering Technique:
Leaf w/rhizome
This needs to be a new growing leaf, take it when it is only a few inches tall and long before it is ready to start popping open. You need to get a small piece of the rhizome too. Get one short enough to fit in the jar.
Rhizome:
You can use the wedge that's left over after cutting the rhizome to encourage new growth points. You can cut the end off of the rhizome. If the rhizome is old and has long growth you can cut a piece off the end and cut that piece into smaller pieces. A large piece is not needed. I like pieces around 1/4" square and 1/8" thick. Alternatively you can just slice the rhizome into thin slices.
Media:
Multiplication:
4 cups water | 1/4 teaspoon MS w/Vitamins (25% MS)| 2 tablespoons sugar (25g/L) | 1.5 ml PPM | 3 ml BAP | PH 5.6 - 5.7
Rooting:
4 cups water | 1/4 teaspoon MS w/Vitamins (25% MS)| 2 tablespoons sugar (25g/L) | 1.5 ml PPM | 2 ml IBA | PH 5.6 - 5.7
For seeds leave out BAP/IBA but don't forget they have a stratification period. Stratify with GA3.
There is a link to Gibberellic Acid on the links page.
If you are using a piece of rhizome use the multiplication media. If you are using a leaf with a small piece of rhizome use the rooting media with .5 ml/L BAP, if you are lucky it will root and you can plant it normally later. Rhizome pieces must be small, larger ones can not be sterilized.
First I rinse the rhizomes in a bowl using a pipette, several times if needed.
After alcohol, peroxide and bleach the rhizomes are now soaking in PPM.
For good success rinse under running water and sterilize with NaDCC. See the forum for details. It works leaps and bounds better than previous techniques. 25 - 50% MS works well.
