Silica Sand

Silica Sand should not be inhaled.

Silica Sand provides excellent drainage and many sundews appreciate it along with Venus Flytraps. It can also be used in Cephalotus soil. Use Silica Sand because most other sands have a mineral content that will hurt your plants. Generally mixed at 10 - 40%. Use less if your plants are grown indoors in low light all the time. Silica Sand virtually never breaks down. I recommend not using more sand than is needed. Generally 1/4 - 1/6 of the overall mixture is ample. Silica Sand has a neutral PH.

As a general rule - Mixes that include sand should not sit in standing water all the time. While sand does drain extremely well it also wicks water like crazy. Generally put 1/4" of water in a 4" tray and 1/2" of water in a 6" tray. Let it disappear for a day or two before adding more. For flytraps this is especially so. Just make sure it doesn't dry completely out. Top watering sand is highly not recommended.

Sand is heavy! It is much cheaper (because of shipping) to get silica sand locally and add it to our sand free media to produce the desired soil. We are more than happy to help you with this process, just drop us an e-mail, or mix to your preferences. Basically you just need to order the basic or Sarracenia mix and add sand to it. Silica Sand is generally sold in 40 lb bags at most home improvement centers.

We offer all of the listed carnivorous plant soil parts, and various mixes thereof, by the quart and gallon. Click the "CP Soil" link above to go to the store.

Which is highly recommended.
